Pittman-Robertson Wildlife Funding

Wildlife Restoration FundingWildlife conservation in Texas is funded by the Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Act of 1937, (Pittman-Robertson, P-R). The funds allow TPWD's Wildlife Division to offer many services, including the following:

•technical guidance to private landowners (who control 94% of wildlife habitat in Texas)
•TPWD surveys and research for development of hunting regulations
•operation and management of WMAs in Texas
•conducting research and developing techniques for managing wildlife populations and wildlife habitat
Most of the work done by the Wildlife Division is eligible for reimbursement under the P-R Act. For every dollar spent by the Wildlife Division on approved P-R projects, about 75 cents is returned to the Department for wildlife conservation. This amounts to approximately $9 million annually. By law, funding is limited to wildlife management, related public use, and hunter education. Pittman-Robertson funds collected from federal excise taxes paid by manufacturers (an 11% excise tax on sporting rifles, shotguns, ammunition, and archery equipment and a 10% tax on handguns) are distributed to states based on number of hunters and land area. Texas receives the maximum distribution allowable under the program.

Jan. 10, 02:00PM to Jan. 11, 12:00PM

Bonham, Texas

Women's Waterfowl Hunt, Skeet Shoot and Duck Dog Demo

Join us for a fun and hands-on educational weekend. No experience necessary - we will teach you everything you need to know as well as help you to prepare for the hunt. Here is the agenda at a glance:

Saturday Afternoon Dog Demo

Learn how Duck Dogs do it!  This dog demo, provided by Trigger Time Kennels will show how duck dogs work closely with their handlers to bring in the downed birds.  Duck dogs help to ensure that game is harvested and not wasted.

Saturday Afternoon Skeet Shoot

New to shooting at a bird in flight?  Just need to brush up?  Tips and tricks on how to lead, shoot and follow through to ensure a duck is downed.  Plus, shooting skeet is just plain FUN!

Womens' Waterfowl HuntSunday Morning Duck Hunt

Rise and Shine!  Our sponsoring partner, Duks-R-Us will take us to our blinds and their expert guides will call in the birds, then call out the shots.  Just wait 'til you  hear "take 'em!" - and SHOOT!

IMPORTANT NOTE:

All participants will need:

  • a valid Texas hunting license, migratory bird endorsement, federal duck stamp,
  • non-lead shot,

Bowhunter Ed Online + Field Course

The Online + Field Course is ideal for young bow hunters who already have been shooting archery and/or bow hunting. Adults should still assist them with the online course and accompany them during the field course.

The certification process consists of two parts:

  1. Online coursework: Complete the pay-for Online Bowhunter Education Course.
  2. Pre-register for and attend a “Field Course” with a TPWD-certified bowhunter education instructor.
  3. NOTE: Search and register for a field course prior to taking the online bowhunter education course.

Part 1- Online Course

The Online Course is provided by one independent, private vendor for a fee – a fee which is separate from the $15 fee paid to the instructor in Part 2 – the Field Day. After completing the online course, print out the FIELD VOUCHER and bring it with you to the field course.

Take the Online Course

Part 2- Field Course

The Field Course includes: a presentation of ethical and responsible bow hunting, participation in a bow hunting skills trail, a bow shooting exercise/test, review of regulations and a final exam (score at least 75% to pass).

The Field Course is completed in one day (min. 4 hours). You must pre-register for this course with the bowhunter education instructor to reserve a seat and find out further details, such as location and hours.

Register for a Bowhunter Ed Field Course

**If you are unable to find a Field Course near you or in the time frame you need, place your information on our Wait List. We will contact instructors in your area and attempt to schedule a course.**

When you arrive at the Field Course site:

  • Bring the “Field Day” Certificate (Voucher)
  • Pay the $15 fee to the instructor.
  • Demonstrate appropriate knowledge, skills and attitude while completing the Field Day
  • Take the written exam and score at least 75% correct to pass.
  • Upon successful completion of Parts 1 and 2, you will PRINT out your permanent card once the instructor submits an online payment. The instructor will let you know. You may legally bow hunt with a valid Texas hunting license and proof of bow hunter education on certain areas (e.g. Hagerman NWR; Granite Shoals Urban Bow Hunt) or in other states  that require such certification in addition to their state’s hunter education requirements.
  • Note: A bowhunter education certificate does not take the place of a hunter education certificate or state requirement.
